@ParisFashionWeek: On February 28, 2017 Vera Wang was conferred with the insignia of Chevalier de l‘ordre national de la Légion d’Honneur in Paris. The nation’s highest civilian honor, The Légion d’Honneur recognizes men and women from all nationalities for the good they have done across all industries and who are recognized universally for having contributed to the public good. It was founded in 1802 by Napoleon Bonaparte, and over the past two centuries has been bestowed on such luminaries as Robert Redford, Secretary Colin Powell and Ralph Lauren. This year’s midday ceremony was held at Les Invalides, and included a guest list of Ms. Wang’s peers -- Donna Karan, Alber Elbaz, Patrick Demarchelier, Michele Lamy – colleagues and family. The French Ambassador to the United States, Gérard Araud, introduced Ms. Wang and placed the five-point cross with red ribbon to her black dress. After she received the honor, Ms. Wang spoke of her history and “love affair” with Paris. “How do you define a lifelong love affair?” she said. “No one who I know in fashion who has ever had the privilege to live and work in this city has not emerged a more artful, experienced, or sophisticated thinker.” Following her speech, Hamish Bowles delivered a note from Vogue Editor-in-Chief, Anna Wintour, Ms. Wang’s colleague from her days as a Vogue fashion editor. Ms. Wintour spoke of her first memories of working with Ms. Wang, which included her first day: She arrived in a white Saint Laurent shirtdress and platforms, and was informed by fashion editor Polly Mellen that she was overdressed for such a hands-on job. So she went home, changed, returned in jeans, and went to work. “When I think of our time together, that’s what I always remember,” Mr. Bowles read from the letter. “No one was more industrious than you. That and the fact that no one was funnier, or louder, or more neurotic or more endearing.” When interviewed by Vogue about the honor she received Ms. Wang said, “In a way, it’s pressure, but I’m so honored; even for a lifetime career, it’s something I never would have expected in my wildest dreams. Hopefully it will continue long after this.”
