Vegetarian food again available to Serbia’s preschoolers
Nenad Vukosavljevic, a father of two children who attend a state-run kindergarten in Belgrade, has told N1 on Wednesday that his daughters would again have vegetarian meals which were banned only a few days ago.
The head of the kindergarten reacted even before the Commissioner for Protection of Equality ruled on the case after Vukosavljevic asked for help.
He was earlier told that according to new rules, a joint work of two ministries – education and health - >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << only health or religious reasons could change a menu.
The decision left the parents whose children don’t eat meat with only one choice – to leave them at home since even bringing vegetarian food to the kindergarten was not allowed by new rules.
“Our child will not be discriminated any longer, and we hope that other children will be protected as well,’ Vukosavljevic said.
Earlier, he mentioned a religious reason but was asked to provide a certificate from his religious community, what was an illegal request.
Vukosavljevic brought the issue up with the Commissioner Brankica Jankovic, who said her office had recommended the preschool institutions to take care of the children’s diet for whatever reason.
“We, as a state, committed ourselves to remove all kinds of discrimination of children, and that is the standard here, but obviously, we will have to face the violations of the law,” she told N1, adding she would rule on the parents’ appeal in 90 days.
