On je nekoliko puta menjao priču šta se dogodilo njegovoj supruzi i ćerkama. Prvo je tvrdio da su sve tri nestale, a policiji je rekao da se sa suprugom ranije tog dana posvađao. U medijima je tih dana iznosio razne emotivne apele, da bi se uskoro saznalo da je upravo on glavni osumnjičeni za ubistvo supruge i ćerke.

It is believed that they were strangled to death. . Police arrested Christopher Watts, 33, late Wednesday on suspicion of killing his wife and children. Their bodies were found on Thursday on property owned by Andarko Petroleum, one of Colorado's largest oil and gas drillers, where Watts worked as an operator. Court documents showed that the girls had been submerged in crude oil for four days. Shanann was found nearby at an oil rig. . Earlier this week, Watts went on TV and appealed for the return of his wife and children before allegedly confessing that he had killed them. Speaking on NBC's Today show, Watts said he and Shanann had had an "emotional" conversation that morning and had stayed up talking but didn't give any further details. Prosecutors said they believe the family was murdered in their home and the bodies were later moved. . Shanann was 15 weeks pregnant and was due to have a gender reveal party on Saturday. Her brother said Shanann struggled to conceive her three children as she suffered from lupus, a disease that makes pregnancies risky. . Public records showed the family had financial difficulties, including a bankruptcy in 2015, and were sued by their homeowner association in July 2018. A motive for the murders hasn’t been revealed by authorities. . Tvrdi da je razlog napada to što je od supruge zatražio razvod, nakon čega je ona pobesnela.

Takođe, optužen je za uništavanje dokaza budući da je navodno Šenon zakopao u plitkom grobu, a tela dve ćerke bacio u bačvu sirove nafte. U medijima je objavljeno da je sve troje zadavljeno, ali vlasti nisu potvrdile uzrok smrti.

Javnosti se obratila i Votsova ljubavnica, sa kojom je navodno bio u vezi u maju i junu ove godine.  Ona je rekla da je voleo "životinjski" seks i da je znao 'podivljati' tokom snošaja. Takođe, kazala je da joj govorio o svojim seksualnim fantazijama o silovanju.

U nekim medijima pojavila su se i nagađanja kako je Vots ranije imao ljubavne veze i sa muškarcima.
