Alliance for Serbia: Vucic is to blame for Friday assault
The representative of Serbia’s opposition coalition, Dragan Djilas, said on Saturday that the “main person to blame” for the Friday assault on an opposition party leader in the town of Krusevac is President Aleksandar Vucic, because of his anti-opposition rhetoric.
The leader of the Serbian Left, Borko Stefanovic, was knocked down and beaten as he arrived in town for an opposition meeting.
"A group >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << of thugs armed with metal bars stopped Stefanovic, knocked him down on the pavement and beat him mercilessly,“ a press release by the Alliance for Serbia coalition said, adding that two party activists were also beaten when they tried to help Stefanovic.
Stefanovic said on Saturday that the assault, which he called attempted murder, must have been organised.
“They followed us through Krusevac, they took photos of us, they knew where we are and had the intention to commit murder,” he said.
“I was hit with a metal object in the back of the head,” he said.
Djilas, the coalition representative, sent a message to Serbia’s President at a conference on Saturday.
“Aleksandar Vucic, you are the main person to blame for what happened yesterday evening in Krusevac, you are much more guilty than the perpetrators,” he said. “You have been calling us traitors, lowlifes (...).”
He also said that the attack shows EU High Representative Federica Mogherini how much Serbia’s democracy has developed.
“The only thing missing is a curfew,” he said.
