Compromise main word in Thaci-Brnabic meeting in Minsk

Serbia’s Prime Minister Ana Brnabic and Kosovo’s President Hashim Thaci discussed in Minsk on Wednesday eventual progress in the Belgrade – Pristina dialogue, with a compromise as a dominant word in the conversation, the Belarus Belta news agency reported.

The agency quoted Brnabic as “expressing hope the two sides will reach an agreement, a compromise, which will further stabilise the region.”

Belarus >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu N1 televizija << Foreign Minister Vladimir Makej told reporters that the word compromise was often used during the talks at the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference (MSC) Core Group.

“This meeting is also important. The two sides express readiness for the dialogue. And that is, in our opinion, the only way to solve the problem,” Makej said.

The Belgrade – Pristina dialogue has reached the dead-end in July when Thaci and his Serbia’s counterpart set across each other for the last time.

In September, they separately met with Federica Mogherini, the European Union Foreign and Security Policy chief and the main facilitator in the talks.

No progress has been reported since, neither there has been any date set for the talks to resume.

The EU is officially in charge of mediating the dialogue, though the US takes the role of a valuable player, particularly from Pristina’s point of view. Russia also voices its opinion in supporting Belgrade.

However, many international officials have reiterated the Union will remain the primary factor in the Belgrade – Pristina dialogue since both Kosovo and Serbia see their future within the bloc.

Belgrade started the accession negotiations in 2013, while Pristina, even if it reaches a legally binding agreement with Serbia, will find it difficult to begin the integration process unless five EU member states that have not recognised its independence change the stand.

The Belta agency said Minsk had hosted talks in solving problems concerning Nagorno-Karabakh and eastern Ukraine and described today’s meeting between the representatives of Belgrade and Pristina as “a start of a new Minsk process.”

Belarus, a former USSR republic, is not an EU member nor it has so far aspired to be. Nevertheless, it cooperates with the bloc in the Eastern Partnership and the Baku Initiative projects.
