Djurdjevdan Session of City Assembly

In the presence of their excellencies, ambassadors of Palestina, Romania and Vatican in Serbia, representatives of delegations of twin and friendly cities, representatives of churches and religious communities, representatives of political and social life of the city and the region, Ceremonial Assembly Session was held today in the Old Assembly in Kragujevac dedicated to Đurđevdan – The Day of the City of Kragujevac.

This is, according to the Mayor Veroljub Stevanović, a date of great >> Pročitaj celu vest na sajtu Kragujevac.rs << significance for political history of the nation and especially our city. It is understandable, Stevanović added, why Kragujevac holds on to this historical memory. “By the decision of Knjaz Miloš in 1818, Kragujevac was proclaimed the first capital of modern Serbia and owing to this decision our city had an urban plan which defined it as a modern Serbian city, where first theatre will be founded, as well as first grammar school, first lyceum, first court house, first apothecary, first reading house, which is why we are today holding this session precisely in this building, the oldest parliamentary edifice in the history of Serbian people” said Stevanović.

While speaking about the present moment in the city and the country, mayor Veroljub Stevanović pointed out that, at this point, Šumadija is the only region that creates more than it spends. “We have managed, in the year of crisis and fiscal consolidation, which meant direct reduction of the budget of local self-governments, to sustain vital functions and social services of the city”, said Stevanović and added that the most significant achievments the city has recorded were in the field of health care. He reminded that only two years ago the City of Kragujevac fully financed the construction of the new object in primary health care, Health Centre 4 with school clinic, while this year new building for Emergency health care was built. “The realisation of these projects alone has cost the city of Kragujevac more than 10 million dinars on the account of VAT”, Stevanović emphasized. He also added that while Kragujevac invests huge efforts to maintain not only the system of local self-government and frames of normal life, the government had several infrastructural projects on this territory.

Mayor pointed out two such projects – the first one is the construction of the highway and connecting Kragujevac with Corridor 10, where the works are waiting to be continued even though the city has completed its part of the job. The realisation is in delay due to the lack of resources from the Republic; the second project he mentioned is the blockage of the road, railway and transport routes by the employees of the company “Autosaobraćaj”. Veroljub Stevanović stressed that he wants to believe that the new Government will have different politics, otherwise “I am sure that Kragujevac will manage to endure and survive such politics of the Government”.

The Session of City Assembly was, as in the previous years, served as a chance to award the best individuals, companies, institutions with the highest titles and recognitions by the city of Kragujevac. The title of Honorary citizen was awarded to Igor Polednak, former deputy Chief of the South Moravic region, while the title of Prominent citizen was awarded to Milan Đokić, professor of philosophy form Kragujevac and former principal of First Grammar School of Kragujevac.

Mayor, Veroljub Stevanović has also awarded Đurđevdan awards for the accomplishments in 2013: in the field of journalism to Nenad Živanović, in the field of education to Mario Badjuk, in the field of humanitarian work to protoiereus Živomir Žole Milovanović, in the field of art to Slobodan Ćirović, in the field of medicine to Prof Dr Vladimir Jurišić, in the field of culture to Association “Kragujevac – our city” and Borivoje Radić.

By the decision of the mayor St. George’s plaques, which were also awarded during the session, were awarded to companies Fiat automobiles Serbia and Gomma Line.
